Google AI Overviews | Retrieved · Synthesized · Cited

Position one is not the top anymore.
The citation above it is.

Google now answers a growing share of searches before the first organic link, and it writes that answer from a short list of retrieved sources. We restructure your content, entities and markup so your page belongs on that list, then track which queries you are cited on.

Ranked is not cited

Two pages can rank the same and only one gets quoted.

Organic ranking sorts a long list. An AI Overview is written from a much shorter retrieved set, chosen on different grounds. Ranking well makes a page a candidate. What decides whether it gets quoted is closer to editorial: can one passage be lifted and stay accurate, is it clear who is making the claim, and does the entity behind it resolve to something Google recognizes.

That is why a site with a weaker link profile can appear in an AI Overview above the page that outranks it. It is also why this is fixable: structure, markup, authorship and entity clarity are things we ship ourselves, not recommendations we hand off to someone else's backlog.

The same mechanism decides citation on ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants, just against a different retrieval set. That is our Generative Engine Optimization service; most clients scope the two together since the groundwork overlaps.

Track record

The track record predates the company.

The team behind Wegile DGTL has worked together for over a decade, running the complete marketing engine at its parent company, a software development company, and delivering campaigns for its clients before that. The results below were earned by this team on accounts where the technical, content and paid work were run together. AI Overviews are newer than most of these engagements, so we present these as the record of the team rather than as citation case studies, and the audit reports your own starting position instead of borrowing someone else's.

What we optimize

The signals that decide which sources an AI Overview quotes.

Six areas, worked in the order the dependencies run. In plain terms: Google has to find your page (retrieval), know who you are (entities), and trust what you are claiming (structured data) before it will ever quote you. That is a different job from ranking a page, which is why a standard technical SEO checklist or a content refresh rarely moves it on its own.

01

Retrieval and passages

Making sure Google can find your page at all, and that one paragraph can be lifted out and still make sense on its own. It is the same passage-level work behind our Answer Engine Optimization, aimed here at Google's own AI Overview specifically.

02

Entities and Knowledge Graph

Making sure Google knows exactly who you are: your brand, people and services named consistently everywhere, and linked to the external profiles Google already trusts.

03

Structured data

Labeling your page in a language Google's systems read directly, instead of leaving it to guess. This is the same schema work Technical SEO covers, held to the stricter standard a generated answer needs.

04

E-E-A-T signals

Short for Experience, Expertise, Authority and Trust: the signals Google uses to judge whether your claims are credible enough to repeat in someone else's words.

05

AI-ready content

A direct answer near the top, clear headings mapped to real questions, and facts kept consistent across every page that repeats them, the formats retrieval reaches for most readily.

06

Ongoing monitoring

Tracking which queries return an AI Overview, who gets cited, and how that changes over time. An AI Overview is not a fixed result, so this keeps running after launch rather than stopping at it.

This runs alongside your ranking work rather than instead of it. The pages that get cited are usually already strong organic pages carrying the extra structure a generated answer needs, which is why the two compound. Earn the citation and you hold the top of the page as well as the link below it.

Not the same target

A featured snippet and an AI Overview are won differently.

For years the featured snippet was the ceiling, and the work was to be the single clearest answer on the page. An AI Overview is assembled instead of quoted, which changes what qualifies a source and how many sources can win at once.

Featured snippet
AI Overview
Sources used
One page, quoted close to verbatim
Several pages, synthesized into one answer
What earns the placement
A clear, direct answer near the top of a page that already ranks
Extractable passages, defined entities and trust signals behind the claim
How many can win
One site holds the position
Several sites are cited on the same query
What happens next
The searcher reads the excerpt and decides whether to click
The searcher can ask a follow-up without leaving the results page

The structural work overlaps, which is why we target both. Winning one does not hand you the other.

The zero-click question

If Google answers the question, what is the citation worth?

It is the right thing to ask before funding this. A growing share of searches are now resolved inside the AI Overview, and on those searches nobody visits any website, including the ones cited. Any agency telling you this simply replaces the traffic it displaces is selling past the question.

What a citation buys is being the named source at the moment the answer is formed, carrying brand recall into the next search and the shortlist. The alternative is not neutral either: on those same queries, a competitor is being named instead of you.

So we report both sides. Citations gained and where they sit, next to the organic impressions and clicks from Search Console, so you can weigh the trade rather than take our word for it.

What lands in the report

  • 01Citation frequency across your priority queries, checked query by query
  • 02Which competitor sources are cited beside you, and which passage of theirs was used
  • 03Organic impressions and clicks for the same pages, from your Search Console
  • 04Movement over time, since AI Overviews rewrite themselves as Google iterates

Rechecked on a schedule. AI Overviews rewrite themselves.

Our process

Audit, prioritize, ship, verify, monitor.

Five stages, run in that order. The order carries the work: restructuring content before you know which queries return an overview and who is cited on them produces a rewrite nobody can measure.

01

AI visibility audit

Your priority queries run and logged: which return an AI Overview, which sources are cited on each, and which of your pages are candidates. Alongside that, an entity review of how your brand, people and services are currently defined, and a schema and E-E-A-T pass on the pages meant to carry the claims.

02

Prioritized fix list

Findings scored on the commercial value behind the query against the effort to become citable on it. The list opens with what changes the picture, and it states plainly which pages are already structured well enough to leave alone. Queries where no overview appears are marked as such rather than padded into the scope.

03

Implementation

Content restructured into extractable passages, entity and schema markup shipped into your codebase or CMS by engineers, authorship and credential detail added where it is thin. Template-level problems are fixed at the template, so new pages inherit the structure instead of needing the same pass again.

04

Recheck and verify

Pages resubmitted, markup validated, then the original queries rerun by hand to see whether the citation landed and what the overview now says. A passage that deployed cleanly and still is not being quoted is an open item, not a finished one, and the reason gets written down.

05

Ongoing monitoring

AI Overviews do not hold still. Google iterates the feature, a competitor publishes a cleaner answer, an overview that appeared last month stops triggering. Scheduled rechecks against the same query set surface that in weeks rather than at the next quarterly review, with the report showing movement in both directions.

AI Overviews FAQs

Straight answers. No sales fluff.

The questions founders, in-house SEO teams and developers ask before commissioning AI Overviews work, answered plainly and in full.

A citation audit of your priority queries showing which ones return an AI Overview today and who is cited in each, content restructured into passages that can be extracted and attributed on their own, entity optimization so your brand, people and services resolve to something Google recognizes, structured data matched to what each template actually is, and E-E-A-T work on the pages that make claims.

Monitoring follows, because an overview is not a fixed result. The work is shipped by the same engineers who ship production code, so it lands rather than arriving as a findings document to be scheduled later.

Standard SEO competes for a position in a ranked list. An AI Overview is written from a retrieved set of sources, which is much shorter and selected on different grounds. Ranking well makes a page a candidate for that set. Whether it gets quoted depends on how cleanly one passage can be lifted and stay accurate, how unambiguously your entities are defined, and how visible the trust signals behind the claim are.

The practical difference is where the leverage sits. In classic organic work, links do a lot of it. Here, structure, markup, authorship and entity clarity do more, which is why a site with a lighter link profile can be cited above the page outranking it.

Google has not published a source-selection algorithm, so anyone stating the rules with certainty is guessing. What is observable across live queries is a consistent pattern: the cited pages tend to answer the specific question directly and early, make claims concrete enough to attribute, carry recognizable authorship, describe their entities the same way everywhere, and hold together when a passage is pulled out of context.

Those are the levers, and they are the ones we work on. Where something is inference rather than documentation, the audit says so rather than presenting it as a rule.

No. A featured snippet quotes a single page close to verbatim. An AI Overview is generated text written in Google's own words from several retrieved sources, with links out to them, which means more than one site can be cited on the same query.

Winning a snippet is about being the clearest single answer. Being cited in an overview is about being one of several usable sources. The structural groundwork overlaps enough that we target both, but optimizing for one does not hand you the other.

An entity is a thing Google can identify and hold facts about: your company, your founder, a service, a location. Generated answers are assembled around entities rather than keyword strings, so a brand that exists only as a phrase on a page is harder to reference than one that resolves to a known thing.

In practice it means naming and describing those things consistently across the site, marking up the relationships so nothing is left to inference, linking out to the external profiles Google already trusts, and closing the gaps that keep a Knowledge Graph entry from forming. Semantic search rewards the same clarity, which is why this work tends to lift ordinary organic performance alongside citation. It is also the same entity groundwork Answer Engine Optimization depends on for other assistants.

Individual pages sometimes get pulled in within a few weeks of being restructured, because overviews refresh faster than rankings and do not need a position change to start citing you. Consistent presence across a set of queries usually takes a few months, since entity and E-E-A-T signals accumulate rather than switch on.

We log the query-level starting position before anything changes, so progress is measured against a recorded baseline rather than described after the fact.

By checking the queries and recording what comes back. For each priority query we log whether an overview appears, which sources are cited, and where you sit among them, then recheck on a schedule. No tool reports citation presence reliably yet, so this part is done by hand and dated.

Search Console impressions and clicks sit next to it in the same report, because a page can gain a citation and hold its organic traffic at the same time, and both numbers belong in the same view.

This page is about Google's own AI Overview feature. Coverage across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other assistants is our GEO service, a separate audit with its own retrieval behavior and its own crawler access questions to account for.

The two share a lot of groundwork and most clients scope them together, so they usually run side by side. They are still two engagements, and we do not price one as though it delivers the other.

One last thing

The audit costs nothing, and the query list is yours either way.

Your priority queries checked against live AI Overviews, the sources currently cited on each one, the entity and schema gaps standing between your pages and that set, and an honest note on the queries where no overview appears at all. Implement it with us, hand it to your own team, or keep it on file. The document is yours regardless.
